UN chief condemns North Korean missile launch, Pyongyang laments ‘deplorable attitude’

Antonio Guterres said on Friday that North Korea should “immediately refrain” from any further “provocation.” Statements criticized this Sunday by the North Korean regime.

The North Korean foreign minister criticized this Sunday the “deplorable attitude” of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, who condemned a recent launch by Pyongyang of an intercontinental ballistic missile, the state agency KCNA announced.

I express my deep regret that the Secretary General of the United Nations observes a truly deplorable attitude, alien to the purpose and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and its very mission, which is to maintain impartiality, objectivity and equity in all matters. said Minister Choe Son Hui.

He added that it “clearly proves” that Antonio Guterres “is a puppet of the United States.”

This Monday, the United Nations Security Council will meet to discuss the situation in North Korea. Asking the UN body to “respond appropriately”, the European Union condemned “a dangerous, illegal and irresponsible action”.

In a statement released this Sunday, the G7 member countries condemned “in the strongest terms the new irresponsible launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile”, denouncing “a flagrant violation of the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council”.

Caution

The United States, South Korea and Japan have intensified joint military drills in recent months since Kim Jong Un declared North Korea’s nuclear status “irreversible” in September. Seoul and Washington notably held the largest joint air exercises in their history in late October and early November.

On Sunday, the North Korean foreign minister recalled that the Pyongyang authorities had “recently advised the UN Secretary General to examine the issue of the Korean peninsula impartially and objectively.”

He highlighted North Korea’s “self-defense” policy “in a worrying security environment in the region due to dangerous military cooperation between the United States and its vassal forces.”

“The UN Secretary General has still held North Korea responsible and not the United States,” the minister said.
