Budapest: tens of thousands of people present for the progress of pride despite the prohibition

Budapest’s pride march was prohibited by the Hungarian police on Saturday, June 28, before the city mayor denounced a decision without “any value.” Tens of thousands of people are present, despite the prohibition, including European elected officials.

Tens of thousands of people began to parade this Saturday, June 28 in Budapest, in Hungary, in a festive atmosphere on Saturday, June 28, challenging the banishment of the Pride March, journalists from the France-Presse (AFP) agency reported.

Police prohibited this demonstration last week, an unprecedented regression of LGBT+ rights in the EU justified by “children’s protection”, but the organizers and the ecological City Council have decided to maintain it, believing that such a municipal event did not require official authorization.

On the site, several MEPs, including French, are present participating in the event. The European commissioner responsible for equality, Hadja Lahbib, also made the trip. Among the elected officials present in Budapest, Raphaël Glucksmann called the European Commission, shortly before walking, to “stop” President Viktor Orban.

The Hungarian Prime Minister “understood that everything could afford, that he could walk on us and that there would be no reaction, and that we would forgive him, we would begin the negotiation game with him,” deplora Raphaël Glucksmann.

“LGBTFOBIES do not have their place in our EU”

Jean-Marc Berthon, ambassador to the rights of LGBT+people, present to officially represent the French government during this walk, writes this Saturday in X that “Budapest’s pride refers to all European citizens” and remember that “LGBTPHOBIES does not take place in our European Union.”

“Proud and dissuaded ‘in front of Orbán, the authoritarian! Happy pride in Budapest!”, A says Lfi Manon Aubry in X.

“Beyond our political differences: united for the defense of fundamental freedoms and the rule of law in the European Union,” he writes about X Valérie Hayer, president of the Renew Group in the European Parliament.

The latter asked the AFP to “put pressure on the states” so that “the procedure” of article 7 will be relaunched at least symbolically, destined to sanction a Member State where a “serious violation” of the rule of law is observed.

Prohibited by the police, before a replica of the mayor

Budapest police announced on Thursday, June 19, the prohibition of pride in the Hungarian capital, invoking a recent anti-LGBT+ law of the Viktor Orban nationalist government, which has hindered the rights of LGBT+ people on behalf of “children” for years.

The 16 -page document refers to the text adopted in mid -March aimed at prohibiting any demonstration that violates the 2021 legislation that prohibits evoking with minors “homosexuality and sex change.”

It is also based on a constitutional amendment voted shortly after affirming “the primacy of children’s right to a correct physical, mental and moral development in any other right”, including the meeting. According to the authorities, the walk must be carried out in a closed place, such as a stadium, outside the eyes of the children.

The mayor of Budapest responded by keeping the rally, denouncing a decision that “has no value.” This is a “municipal event” that does not require an official authorization, Gergelly Karacsary wrote on Facebook.

Participants are exposed to a fine of up to 500 euros, adds “that will be donated for child protection.” With the possibility that the police identify criminals through facial recognition tools.
