“This area of around 7,700 hectares is completely surrounded by the Everglades and has an effective and economical opportunity to build a temporary detention center, because it is not necessary to invest a lot in the perimeter,” he said in a video that shows images of the area.
“If people go out, there is not much to wait for them, apart from the caimanes and the pythons,” he added.

The new detention center will begin to organize migrants in “30 to 60 days after the beginning of construction”, according to the Attorney General of Florida. Its operation could cost around $ 450 million a year, but the State may request federal funds, McLaughlin, spokesman for the National Security in local media, assured Tricia.
The ultra conservative governor of the State, Ron Desantis, is proud to work in close collaboration with the Trump administration in his massive migrants expulsion program. “Transforming the Everglades into a detention center for immigrants funded by taxpayers is a grotesque mixture of cruelty and political theater,” said Alex Howard, former head of the administration Joe Biden (2021-2025) in Miami Herald.
The Friends of the Everglades organization denounced “an unacceptable and useless risk” for an ecosystem that houses more than 2,000 species of animals and plants, in a letter sent to the governor of Florida.
