Italy: a year of 70 years dies sweeping by a mud flow after violent thunderstorms

A 70 -year -old man died in Bardonnèche, Italy, this Monday, June 30, after being swept by a clay flow. Important floods have reached this city in the northwest of the country, after thunderstorms, as a result of the warm climate.

The storms and terrible floods hit the Alps this Monday, June 30. A 70 -year -old man died, swept by a mud flow, in Bardonnèche, an Italian commune that is exiting the Fréjus tunnel.

The Fréjus, the river that crosses the town, left their bed in the afternoon, creating a mud torrent that has hit full speed. A district of the city is currently isolated.

It is not the first time that this town is affected by bad weather. In 2024, part of the city had been separated from the other for several days. The previous year, a similar situation had already taken place.

Before the storm on Monday, the authorities of the commune had asked the inhabitants to remain locked at home, fearing a dramatic situation, which finally happened.

Rail traffic interrupted between France and Italy

This storm also affected several French municipalities. There were significant floods in Fashionne and Fourneaux (Savoie), cities that border Bardonnèche, causing damage to roads and some homes.

“Torrent du Charmaix entered an flood and overwhelmed, causing located floods. It is its most important flood in 70 years,” Savoy’s prefecture said in a press release.

Several traffic axes are closed and rail traffic between France and Italy is interrupted in both directions, until it is notified. No victim linked to this storm must be deplored in France.

“One of the strongest heat waves in summer”

These thunderstorms occurred after several days of heat wave in Italy. The Italian Ministry of Health was placed on Monday on Red Alert 17 cities from all over the country, including Rome, Milan, Florence and Verona. The “climatic shelters” were installed in Bologna and dehumidifiers distributed to those in need in Ancône.

This is “one of the strongest heat waves in summer”, which is also marked by its particularly long duration, said expert Antonio Spano, founder of the specialized Illmeteo.it site.

In France, Savoy will be in Orange Heat Wave on Tuesday, July 1 and the yellow alert of thunderstorms.
