New judicial victory for Donald Trump in his crusade against the media. Paramount, a parent company of CBS News, will pay $ 16 million to end the legal procedures presented by the US president against the news channel that accuses of having favored Kamala Harris in an interview.
This friendly agreement, reported Tuesday by the US media, is the last concession until the date of important media against the attacks of the Republican President.
It will avoid a consecutive trial in the complaint filed by the billionaire in October 2024, while he was a candidate in the White House. Donald Trump’s lawyers claimed $ 20 billion.
Presidential Library
The amount of $ 16 million will be paid to the future presidential library of Donald Trump and not directly to the president, Paramount said in a statement cited by the US media.
The media conglomerate and entertainment content also indicated that the agreement did not provide any public excuse on its part.
In the midst of the presidential campaign, Donald Trump had presented to the court of the “60 minutes” program of CBS News, accusing him of having cheated an interview with his Democratic rival Kamala Harris.
More specifically, he accused CBS News of having published a transition from the interview in which the candidate would have answered a question about the war between Israel and Hamas.
CBS had rejected these accusations, explaining in particular that it was common in the profession selecting the passages to be disseminated in an interview.
A friendly agreement to promote a fusion project?
The friendly agreement occurs when part of Paramount’s executive executives believe that this dispute with Donald Trump obstructs the group’s merger project with the Skydance production company, to try to compete with the transmission barons.
Last May, seven Democratic and American senators US Independent had urged the president of Paramount Global, Shari Redstone, not to “capitular” in the face of the legal procedures initiated by Donald Trump.
The judicial confrontation initiated by Donald Trump against CBS News made waves, including the game and pillar of the producer of “60 minutes”, Bill Owens. There had been attacks against their journalistic independence.
A month later, the head of CBS News, Wendy McMahon, had also resigned.
Very critical of traditional media, described as “false news” (false information), Donald Trump launched legal attacks against other press companies, including the local newspaper of the Monks Registry, and made ABC (Disney Group), which paid $ 15 million under the threat of a defamation trial.
