An “unimaginable tragedy.” Nine people died on the night of this Sunday, July 13, in the fire of a residence for the elderly in the state of Massachusetts of the United States, firefighters said in a statement, as well as US media such as CNN.
About fifty firefighters intervened shortly before 10 pm in this establishment located in Fall River from which the flames and thick smoke escaped. “The teams faced an intense fire from the main entrance and many people suspended from the windows, hoping to be rescued,” said Jeffrey Bacon, chief of the Firefighters, Monday morning.
In addition to the nine dead people, 30 people were injured in the fire, including five firefighters. The vital prognosis of the latter has not been compromised.
An open investigation
Jeffrey Bacon deplored an “unimaginable tragedy for affected families and the Fall River community.”
“On behalf of the Fall River Fire Service, I want to express our sincere condolences to the closed mounds this morning,” he added, cited in the Firefighters Declaration.
Some 70 inhabitants occupied this establishment at the time of the fire. An investigation was opened to determine the origin and circumstances of the fire.
