The Office of the Brazilian prosecutor requested on Tuesday, July 15 to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, July 15 to condemn “Coup d’Etat”, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who affirms his innocence and whose trial caused a diplomatic crisis between Brazil and the United States.

He is accused of being the “leader of a criminal organization” who conspired for his continuation in power, regardless of the result of the October 2022 presidential election, won by the current president of the left Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

“Having verified the participation of in fact individuals,” the attorney general concluded that it was “necessary that they were convicted (…) by an armed criminal organization”, “try to abolish the democratic state”, “Coup d’Etat”, as well as for other crimes in relation to the damage caused to public goods, said the prosecution.
The fate of Jair Bolsonaro and his former partners is in the hands of the Alexander de Moraes Supreme Court, threatened with Washington sanctions for his decisions against US social media platforms.
The trial brought to the former head of state also caused the anger of Donald Trump, who accuses Brazil of “Bitch Hunt” and announced customs tariffs of 50% since August 1 in imported Brazilian products. The US president is in fact an ally of Jair Bolsonaro.

“Attack public institutions”

In front of the court, Jair Bolsonaro, who said he was innocent for him, simply admitted to having planned “a constitutional system” to avoid the inauguration of Lula.
The former president “instrumentalized the state apparatus and deliberately implemented a plan aimed at attacking public institutions and the succession process” in the presidential elections, however, the Prosecutor’s Office concluded. This plan failed due to lack of support from the commanders of the Armed Forces.
Lula said he would try to negotiate with Washington to avoid customs duties, while condemning Donald Trump’s “interference” in the Brazilian justice system. He also announced that Brazil could decide to opt for “reciprocity” compared to “any measure of increase in unilaterally customs duties.”
