The Greek coast guard managed to rescue a boat with hundreds of migrants on board that issued a distress signal off the island of Crete shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
The operation was greatly hampered by high winds, but the ship was eventually successfully towed into port.
The migrants have not disembarked yet. A coast guard source told Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency that there would be between 400 and 500 people on board, a number that has not yet been confirmed.
Due to increased patrols by the Greek coast guard and the European Union border agency Frontex in the Aegean Sea, migrants are taking the longest and most dangerous route south to Crete.
