A young man was killed and 33 people were injured during the funeral of Angolan musician “Nagrelha”, including 16 policemen, two of whom were seriously stabbed, according to a Luanda police report.
Speaking to Lusa, the spokesman for the provincial command of the Luanda National Police, superintendent Nestor Goubel, said that it is a 13 or 14-year-old teenager who died of suffocation during the disturbances that occurred near the cemetery, having died on the way to the hospital.
The funeral of the musician Gelson Caio Mendes, better known as “Nagrelha”, mobilized thousands of people who came this morning to the Santa Ana cemetery.
“Given the attempt to invade the cemetery, the police forces were forced to disperse the disorderly crowd,” said the police, in a statement seen by Lusa.
During the operation to restore public order, the death of an unidentified minor was recorded and 16 police officers were injured, of whom two were seriously injured (stabbed), and 17 citizens.
There was also material damage, specifically in four police vehicles and five vandalized buses, a charred motorcycle and a mobile police station, as well as the theft of gas bottles and boxes of beer in an undetermined amount.
“18 citizens suspected of indecent practices were arrested,” add the authorities.
The statement specified that “a considerable human figure” was expected before the legion of Kudurista fans, as well as the news published on social networks that denounced incitement to practices of social disorder, robberies and riots, for which a set of measures was defined measures “with a view to annulling all threats.”
“However, at 9:00 a.m. there were a large number of people on Deolinda Rodrigues Avenue, during the funeral procession that tried to access the Santana cemetery, which led to police intervention that dispersed the crowd with tear gas.
In the ensuing stampede, several people were injured or passed out, as witnessed by Lusa at the scene.
