An investigation into the massacres committed in March in Syria reports 1,426 dead

The Syrian Research Commission on the violence committed in March 2025 against the Alaouite minority has, this Tuesday, July 22, more than 1,400 victims. Among them, a large majority of civilians.

An evaluation that has increased. The National Commission for Research on Violence in March against the Alaouite minority in Syria said on Tuesday, July 22 that identified 298 suspects involved in these abuses that left at least 1,426 dead people.

These conclusions are involved after a new bloodshed that went to the Druse community, questioning the ability of the authorities to contain confessional tensions and restore security in the country more than seven months after the fall of the old power that arose as a minority protector.

The violence of a denominational nature occurred last March on the Syrian coast made some 1,700 dead dead, the overwhelming majority resulting from the Alauita minority to which the family of former President Bashar Al-Assad belongs, according to a report by the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (OSDH).

“The commission has identified 298 people to know in violence,” said its spokesman, Yasser Al-Farhan, during a press conference in Damascus, and added that it is “a provisional number.”

Torture, looting and murders

The Commission also pointed out “serious violations against civilians the 7, 8 and 9 of March, in particular murders, premeditated murders, looting and domestic fires, torture and insults of a denominational nature.” He was able to confirm the names of 1,426 murdered people, including 90 women, most of them were civilians from the Alauita community in the coastal region, informing additional victims whose identity could not be confirmed.

The Commission indicates that it has founded its report on more than 30 field visits, meetings with dozens of people in cities and towns where abuse took place, as well as the testimonies of hundreds of victims and witnesses and government officials.

Damascus accused the armed supporters with former President Assad of having caused violence by attacking the new security forces, which launched a counteroffensive.

Confessional massacres

According to the Commission, 238 members of the Security Forces and the Army were killed in the provinces of Lattaquié, Tartous and Hama during this violence. Then, the authorities sent reinforcements to the region, the committee estimated its number in 200,000 combatants.

According to the OSDH, these forces, backed by paramilitary groups, committed massacres and “summary executions”, killing almost 1,700 people among civilians, mostly to the winging. Syrian and international NGOs report massacres of a denominational nature, in which whole families have perished, including women, children and the elderly. Some combatants have filmed executing civilians at a short distance after insulting and beaten.

The Investigation Commission, created on March 9 by the Interim Syrian president, Ahmad Al-Chareh, initially received his conclusions last April, but his mandate was extended for three months on April 10.

Several human rights organizations have recently urged the Syrian authorities to publish all the conclusions of the investigation and to ensure that officials are taken before justice.
