The remains of a fire of the fire that devastated Los Angeles in January were discovered, taking the human record to at least 31 people dead, more than six months after the start of fires, local authorities announced on Tuesday, July 22.
A team from the Forensic Doctor of Los Angeles County “was yesterday (…) to Altadena”, a suburban city “, to investigate the possible human remains found on the spot,” said a statement from this service.
An investigation still in progress
The team “determined that the remains were very human,” and the results of the fires “are now 31 years old,” added the service. The fires that devastated Los Angeles in January lasted several weeks. Initially they extend very quickly due to strong winds, with bursts that sometimes reached 160 km/h.
The flames have notably destroyed a large part of the Pacific Palisades district, where many celebrities and the city of Altadena reside.
An investigation is still in progress to determine how they started. More than six months after this tragedy, the reconstruction of the affected areas represents a Dantesque site for local authorities. More than 16,000 buildings were destroyed by flames, according to a report by the Economic Development Corporation of Los Angeles County.
