He amputated to disappoint insurance: a British surgeon before the courts

Neil Hopper, 49, recognized as amputation specialist, sought to win more than 500,000 euros of insurers. During a first appearance, but will face a court again on August 26.

The researchers finally discovered the pink pot. Neil Hopper, a vascular surgeon of Truro, southwest of the United Kingdom, appeared in the Court this Wednesday, July 23. He is accused of having lied to insurance about the circumstances of the amputation of his legs to take advantage of it, says The Guardian.

The 49 -year -old is also accused of encouraging someone to eliminate other people’s body parts.

He was accused of three crimes after an investigation of two and a half years carried out by the authorities.

Fraud for more than 500,000 euros

Neil Hopper worked before for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust and said he had lost his legs in 2019 after sepsis. The man would actually have withdrawn his lower limbs.

Then he would have “made a false statement to the insurers, saying that their leg wounds resulted in sepsis and did not self -inflicted, with the intention of obtaining profits,” reports The Guardian. Its objective: win £ 235,622 with an insurer and £ 231,031 with another, that is, £ 466.00 (or 530,000 euros).

At the same time, the surgeon, famous in the region to be a amputation specialist, bought videos on a website called Eunuch Maker. Closed, this particular site the proposed images that show the elimination of members, but also castration. I would have encouraged Marius Gustavson, founder of the site, “withdraw from the third parties.”

In prior detention to trial

Placed in police custody, Neil Hopper did not declare himself guilty during his appearance. A request for bail was filed, but was placed in arrest prior to trial and must appear before a judge on August 26.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust has worked closely with the authorities throughout the investigation. “The accusations do not refer to the professional conduction of Mr. Hopper and nothing suggests any risk for patients,” said the establishment spokesman, who specifies that the surgeon was suspended in March 2023 after his arrest.

That year, Neil Hopper talked about amputations during an interview with the BBC. “I practice many amputations and the only thing that jogged me in my head were the electric tools. The idea that electric tools are used was disgusting,” he said.

He also said he recovered quickly, managed to walk again “in three hours” and claiming to be “more active” since he had lost his legs. Before his legal problems, he had also been preselected by the European Space Agency, who was looking for an astronaut with a disability. It was John Mc Fall who became the first “Parastronaut”.
