Portugal will host the next meeting of the Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations, in 2024, announced on Tuesday the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, who is participating in this year’s edition, which is taking place in the Moroccan city of Fez.
“I had the opportunity to announce here at the Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations in Fez, Morocco, that Portugal will host the next meeting, which will be in 2024,” revealed the minister.
The minister participates in the IX Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), which is taking place today and Wednesday in the Moroccan city of Fez.
The proposal to hold the next meeting in Portugal, which came from the head of Portuguese diplomacy, “was received by acclamation by those present, which has a lot to do with Portugal’s reputation in the international system,” says Gomes Cravinho.
That reputation, he said, is that of “a country that knows how to build intercultural bridges, that knows how to combat extremism, which has been a feature of recent times, and that has the availability and ability to make a difference in a world that is increasingly more marked by divergences and conflicts”.
The work of the Alliance of Civilizations, he stressed, “is unfortunately an increasingly necessary work, because we live in a world with growing intercultural conflict.”
The head of Portuguese diplomacy also referred to “disinformation mechanisms (…) a virus that many countries try to combat and that unfortunately has contributed to creating a world very different from the one Jorge Sampaio had imagined when he was High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations”.
The Alliance of Civilizations has the mission of promoting dialogue and understanding between different communities and cultural and religious traditions, as well as framing the fight against extremism within a logic of prevention, bringing together political leaders, senior officials of the United Nations, research centers and civilians. society representatives.
Among the various plenary sessions of this year’s edition, the minister will speak in the ministerial segment of the Group of Friends of this Alliance and in the interactive debate on preventing and combating violent extremism, in the context of new and emerging threats.
Apart from this meeting, the head of Portuguese diplomacy will also hold bilateral meetings with various counterparts.
