United States: Supreme Court authorizes transfer of Trump’s tax returns to Congress

The United States Supreme Court authorizes the transfer of former President Donald Trump’s tax returns to Congress.

The United States Supreme Court on Tuesday authorized the transfer of Donald Trump’s tax returns to Congress, rejecting a final appeal by the former Republican president.

A commission of the House of Representatives, in the hands of the Democrats until January, has been demanding for three years the documents transmitted to the Treasury by the billionaire between 2015 and 2020.

Former President Application Denied

But unlike every White House occupant since the 1970s, Donald Trump has consistently refused to release his tax returns and fought fiercely in court to block Congress’s request.

After many episodes, a federal appeals court authorized tax authorities in late October to transmit these documents to the House committee. The real estate mogul then sent an urgent appeal to the US Supreme Court to block this transfer.

This had suspended the transmission of the documents on November 1 while waiting to have the elements to decide on the merits.

After receiving arguments from both sides, he finally rejected Donald Trump’s request on Tuesday. According to his practices, he did not explain his motivations.

Various setbacks from the National Court

Although it has been thoroughly reviewed by the former president, the High Court has inflicted several setbacks in this regard and, in particular, authorized in 2020 the transfer of financial documents to the New York court investigating his affairs.

The lack of transparency of Donald Trump, who has made his wealth a campaign argument, has fueled speculation for years about the extent of his fortune or possible conflicts of interest.

However, it is not certain that the transfer of his tax files to Congress will lift the veil on the affairs of the septuagenarian who has just announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidency.

The commission, which requested these tax returns to develop ethical rules on the affairs of presidents, is not supposed to make them public. In January, the Republicans will regain control and will likely walk away from this job.
