Tehran’s Revolutionary Court on Sunday sentenced a sixth defendant to death for his participation in protests against the compulsory use of the Islamic headscarf, the Judicial Authority’s news agency Mizan Online reported.
The defendant was found guilty of having “drawn a knife with intent to kill, sow terror, create insecurity in society during the recent riots”explains Mizan Online.
The court ruled that the convict was a “mohareb” (“enemy of God” in Persian), the agency added.
In recent days, five more “disorderly persons” – according to the classification of the Iranian judicial authorities – have also been sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court.
Defendants can appeal against the sentence to the Supreme Court.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has been rocked by a wave of protests since the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who was detained by vice squad for violating the country’s strict dress code for women. .
Authorities denounced “riots” encouraged by the West and have arrested thousands of people.
