The Latvian president, Egils Levits, announced on Tuesday the appointment as prime minister of Krisjanis Karins, leader of the pro-Western centrist New Unity party, winner of the legislative elections on October 2. Nueva Unidad obtained 18.97% of the votes, which makes it the first parliamentary force, with 26 deputies out of 100.
Coalition with the Greens and the Center-Right
After the elections, this party indicated that it wanted to form a coalition with the United List (Greens and regional, centrist parties), the National Alliance (centre right) and the Progressives (left Social Democrats).
However, this last formation was finally excluded from the talks for “ideological reasons”, refusing Lista Unida and Alianza Nacional to collaborate with it, the presidency said in a statement.
The three parties of the coalition in preparation should benefit from a majority of 54 deputies. They are currently working on the text of the government’s general policy statement.
When they have finalized their agreement, the new government must be approved by a vote of parliament.
