The Portuguese government will consult the President and Parliament in order to recognize the state of Palestine in September at the UN, announced the cabinet of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro in a statement this Thursday, July 31.
Portugal “is considering the recognition of the Palestinian State, as part of a procedure that could be completed during the high -level week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, which will be held in New York next September,” said the press release.
France and Canada have announced that they wanted to recognize the State in the United Nations General Assembly next September. The British prime minister, Keir Starmer, had announced that his country would recognize the state of Palestine in September, unless Israel was taking a series of commitments.
Almost 150 countries have already done so
Almost 150 countries recognize the state of Palestine. In May 2024Spain, Ireland and Norway have formalized this approach, which leads to 10 the number of members of the European Union who have granted recognition. Before these countries, Bulgaria, Chipre, Malta, Hungary, Poland, Sweden and Romania had already recognized the state of Palestine.
The attack of October 7, led mainly by Hamas, led to the Israeli side of 1,219 people, mostly civilians. The Hebrew State has launched a destructive offensive in retaliation in which at least 58,895 people, mainly civil, were killed, according to data from the Ministry of Health in Gaza, considered reliable by the UN.
