A 6,000m ashes column in Russia, the Kracheninnikov volcano exploded for the first time in more than 450 years

Located in the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula, the Krachaninnikov volcano entered, local authorities said on Sunday, August 3, a few days after an earthquake hit the region.

The Krachninnikov volcano, located in the Russian Peninsula of Kamthatka, has first exploded in more than 450 years, a few days after the powerful earthquake that hit this Russian extreme region, Russian authorities said.

The volcano with a height of more than 1,800 meters emits a column of ashes that reaches 6,000 meters, the local antenna of the Russian ministry for emergency situations said on the telegram.

“The Penacho has spread to the east to the Pacific Ocean,” said the same source, adding that no residential area or no tourist group was on its way.

Thirty active volcanoes in the region

The Kamthatka Peninsula, which has about thirty active volcanoes, is one of the most active seismic areas on the planet, at the meeting point between the Pacific and North America tectonic plates.

This practically uninhabited territory welcomes tourists, however, exploring its spectacular mountain landscapes and natural parks full of bear and salmon.

According to the Global Volcanism program of the Smithsonian institution, Kracheninnikov’s last eruption dates back to 1550.

“A lava dome” in training

“We are currently observing a crack on the flank and the formation of a lava dome, which is accompanied by a powerful gas activity,” said Guirina, director of the reaction team to the volcanic eruptions of Kamthatka (Kvert), in the Russian news agency Ria Novosti.

This is the last demonstration of the intense geological activity in this region from the earthquake of magnitude 8.8 that occurred on Wednesday with Kamchatka, which caused Tsunami alerts throughout the Pacific.

On Wednesday, the highest volcano in the Peninsula, the Klioutchevskoï (4,750 meters) had exploded. The region still registered more than 65 earthquakes on Saturday, 10 of which felt in its main town, Petropavlosk-Kamthatski, according to Russian geophysical services.
