The Parliament of Sri Lanka approved on Tuesday, August 5, the dismissal of the Chief of Police of Sri Lanka on Tuesday, August 5, declared guilty of professional misconduct for having directed a “criminal network”, the first in the history of the island.
Decoandu Tennakoon, 54, was withdrawn from his duties after a disciplinary hearing considered him incapable to lead Sri Lanka police, who has 85,000 members.
“I am delighted to inform you that the resolution destined to dismiss De Unitandu Tennakoon was approved with 177 votes, and not against,” said Parliament President Jagath WickMraratne.
“He is the most discredited police chief in the history of our country,” said Parliament, Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Public Security.
A nomination (already) disputed in 2023
In July, an investigation commission composed of three members appointed by Parliament unanimously declared Mr. Tennakoon guilty of the accused facts.
His appointment at the head of the Police in November 2023 had been the subject of an animated controversy, when he had been sentenced to pouring half a million rupees of Sri Lanka (1,600 euros) to a suspect for having tortured him, applying him to him in the genitals.
He is also accused of having ordered a raid in 2023 by an Anti -Crop unit against a hotel in the coastal complex in Weligama, south of the capital of the island.
Not informed of this secret operation, the Local Police had intervened and launched a shooting during which a police officer had been killed and another seriously injured. They had not found drugs.
