The City Council of Jumilla (Murcia), in the southeast of Spain, approved a motion that prohibits the use of public spaces to celebrate Muslim festivals, such as Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, a rite that reaffirmed faith in God.
The motion, presented by the Spanish Vox party, in modification, amended on July 28 by the Conservative Popular Party, is the first in the country, reports the country, placing the Region of Murcia in the heart of the controversy.
In X, the vox of the ultranalist party was delighted with this new measure. “Thanks to Vox, the first measure that prohibits the celebration of Islamic festivals in public spaces has been approved. Spain is and will continue to be forever the land with Christian roots.”
Municipality of around 27,000 inhabitants, the city of Jumilla has almost 1,500 citizens of Muslim confession.
“Preserve our cultural identity”
In its movement, the city of Jumilla evokes its desire to “preserve the traditional values and manifestations of our cultural identity” and “protect traditional religious values and expressions” in Spain.
The text also provides the review of the regulations for the use of municipal sports facilities in the city of Murcia so that they are “exclusively reserved for sports or for events and activities organized by the City Council of Jumilla.”
Since the arrival of Vox to power, the Region of Murcia has become the epicenter of demonstrations very well, the country has observed. Almost a month ago, in Torre Pacheco, another city in Murcia, the extreme right activists launched an anti -immigration campaign against the populations of North Africa and demand the closure of a reception center.
However, the recent motion taken by the municipality of Jumilla seems to contradict article 16 of the Spanish Constitution that stipulates the freedom of nun and worship. Playing in ambiguity, the text remains legal, explains the country: instead of expressly prohibiting Muslim activities, the new regulations “prohibit any activity no sport unless it is sponsored by the municipal council”, with most conservatives.
An Islamophobic proposal
“They do not address other confessions, they are directed to ours. It is an Islamophabic proposal. It is a discriminatory regulation aimed at preventing Muslims from enjoying their vacations,” denounced the president of the Spanish Federation of Islamic religious entities, Mounir Benjelloun Andaloussi Azhari, with the country.
The Spanish left did not take long to react. In X, Francisco Lucas, the socialist leader of Murcia, said: “The PP violates the Constitution and endangers social cohesion simply in the search for power.”
When hiding the Muslim past of Spain, Jumilla’s initiative attacks a professional worked by 2.5 million citizens in Spain, a little more than one million have Spanish nationality, recalls the Andalusian observatory, cited by El País.
