The results of the torrential rains in the province of Gansu, in northwestern China, increased at least 13 dead and 30 missing, Chinese state media reported on Saturday.
Between Thursday and Friday, violent rains caused a rapid increase in water in mountainous areas around the city of Lanzhou, wrapping roads and destroying several homes.
Hundreds of rescued people
On Saturday at noon, the disaster registry is “13 dead and 30 missing,” said China Nouvelle state agency, citing figures from the provincial emergency center.
Hundreds of trapped people were rescued Friday night and thousands of other evacuated, according to China Nouvelle. A rescue team chief, also cited by the agency, had described a “complex” situation, due to muddy and resistant roads, and cut telephone and electrical networks.
Rescue operations were still ongoing on Saturday at noon, according to a publication of the emergency center of the province of Gansu on social networks. President Xi Jinping had ordered an “absolute effort” on Friday to save the missing persons, according to the official CCTV television channel.
Natural disasters often reach China, especially during the summer, when certain regions are beaten by heavy rains, while others suffer from overwhelming heat.
44 people killed in July
Last month, torrential rains in northern Beijing killed 44 people, rural suburbs have been more seriously affected, which led the authorities to a rare mea guilt.
On Saturday, the authorities also announced a yellow alert with torrential rains and activated a plan to respond floods in the provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei and Chongqing, according to CCTV.
