At least 37 people were killed in Nigeria on Tuesday when two buses and a light vehicle collided, setting all three vehicles on fire, the country’s highway authorities said.
“So far, we have confirmed eight injuries and 37 deaths, most of them burned,” said the commander of the Nigerian Federal Security Corps (FRSC) for the states of Bauchi, Yobe and Borno, Rotimi Adeleye, quoted by the media.
The accident occurred on the highway between the towns of Maiduguri and Damaturu, near the town of Jakana, in Borno state.
Adeleye said the two buses were traveling in “opposite directions” when a tire on one of the vehicles blew out, causing the head-on collision.
Traffic accidents are common on the roads of Nigeria. In February, at least 17 people were killed in Nigeria when a bus collided with a tanker truck.
