Russian President Vladimir Putin, and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un undertaken to “strengthen cooperation” between their two countries, during a telephone call informed on Wednesday, August 13.
Considering with their strategic association “in all fields” signed in 2024, especially involving a mutual defense pact, the two leaders “confirmed their desire to strengthen cooperation in the future”, according to the official official news agency of North Kidna, Kcna.
This call, which took place on Tuesday, occurs a few days before a summit scheduled for Friday between Vladimir Putin and the president of the United States, Donald Trump, in Alaska, to talk about a solution to the war in Ukraine.
Support between Moscow and Pyongyang
Vladimir Putin also “shared information with Kim Jong-un in the context of future discussions” with Donald Trump, according to a Kremlin statement. The relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have developed considerably since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. North Korea actively participated in the conflict by providing thousands of soldiers to their ally, in addition to weapons and ammunition.
“The Russian President has once again rented the support provided by the Popular Democratic Republic of Korea, as well as courage, heroism and the spirit of sacrifice demonstrated” by the North Korean troops “in the liberation of Koursk,” a Russian region that had been partially occupied by Ukraine, Kcna added.
In mid-July, Kim Jong-un assured Moscow the unconditional “support” of Pyongyang against Ukraine, during a visit to the Russian diplomacy head, Sergei Lavrov.
In addition, an airline was reopened between the capitals of the two countries at the end of July, marking a first for decades and an additional advance in this bilateral association.
