The earthquake registered this morning in the Turkish province of Duzce, 200 kilometers east of Istanbul, caused at least 46 injuries, one of them in critical condition, the authorities announced.
“We have 22 injured, one of whom is in a critical condition,” Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said.
The quake in the northwest of the country was felt in the cities of Istanbul and Ankara, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.
The hypocenter was located at a depth of ten kilometers, according to the Turkish authorities.
Turkey is located in one of the most active seismic zones in the world.
In January 2000, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Elazig, killing more than 40 people.
In November of the same year, a magnitude 7 earthquake in the Aegean Sea killed 114 people and injured more than a thousand in Turkey.
