A dreaded climate episode. More than 325,500 inhabitants of five Vietnamese coastal provinces will be transferred to public schools and buildings transformed into temporary evacuation centers, authorities said this Sunday, August 24.
The Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet national company announced the cancellation of air links. The storm must touch the ground on the east coast of Vietnam on Monday.
“The situation is extremely dangerous and is not safe for any vehicle or structure, such as tourist or fishing vessels, as well as aquaculture facilities,” said the disaster management service that comes from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment.
The fifth tropical cyclone of the year
The Kajiki typhoon runs slowly along the southern coast of China with sustained winds that reach almost 170 kilometers per hour, according to the joint warning tifones alert, and should be strengthened even more.
A strong precipitation is expected on Monday and Tuesday in certain parts of the Vietnamese provinces of Ha Tinh and Nghe An, according to China’s weather administration, with strong winds that probably affect electrical infrastructure, transport and other sectors.
This is the fifth tropical cyclone to hit Vietnam this year. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, more than one hundred people died or disappeared during natural disasters in the first seven months of 2025.
Economic losses are estimated at more than 19 million euros. The Tropical Coastal Complex of Hainan, China, raised its level of emergency at the highest grade on Sunday and evacuated around 20,000 inhabitants this Sunday, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Most intense cyclones in time
The main city of the island, Sanya, has closed its tourist sites and suspended its commercial activities.
Last September, Vietnam suffered economic losses for an amount of 3 billion euros due to Yagi’s typhoon, which had swept the north of the country and caused hundreds of victims.
Scientists affirm that the climate change of human origin leads to more intense and unpredictable climatic phenomena, increasing the risk of destructive floods and storms, especially in tropical areas.
