“I can’t wait to see him”: Donald Trump says he wants to meet Kim Jong-un again

During a meeting with the South Korean leader Lee Jae-Myung, the US president said he hoped to meet this year with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, with whom he considers to maintain an excellent relationship.

Donald Trump said Monday, August 25 that he hoped to meet the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, maybe this year, during a meeting with the new South Korean president who had not begun under the best auspices.

After the attacks against internal policy in South Korea, the US president said that he was, in the case of North Korea, in the same wavelength as the president of South Korea, Lee Jae-Myung, a leader classified to the left and favorable to a dialogue with the north.

Donald Trump, who had met Kim Jong-a three times during his first term (2017-2021), said he had an excellent relationship with the North Korean leader and knew him “almost better than anyone, apart from his sister.”

“At one time or another, I will see it. I can’t wait to see it,” he told the press, adding that a meeting can take place this year.

In a speech pronounced after his meeting with Donald Trump, Lee Jae-Myung begged a “pragmatic”, “more reciprocal” and “appealed to the future” between the two countries.

He also warned of nuclear capabilities in North Korea. “An intercontinental ballistic missile capable of arriving in the United States develops almost completely and continues to strengthen its ability to produce around 10 to 20 nuclear bombs per year,” he said.

The two Koreas have been technically at war for more than seven decades, the conflict that opposed from 1950 to 1953 had completed an armistice, and not with a peace treaty.

A Trump tower in North Korea?

Donald Trump repeats the envy of having finished six or seven wars in seven months, a disputed statement, but often not expressed in North Korea.

During his first mandate, Kim Jong-A had known significantly during a summit in June 2019 in the 1953 demilitarized armistice line, even taking some symbolic steps on the North Korean soil. But these meetings have not produced great progress.

Since then, North Korea, which has approached Russia in the context of the war against Ukraine, continues to refuse to discuss the dismantling of its nuclear program.

Lee Jae-Myung, who criticized the US army in the past, hastened to favor President Trump, stating that he had made the United States “not a guarantor of peace, but a peacemaker.”

“I can’t wait to see you meeting with President Kim Jong-un and see a Trump tower in North Korea built and playing golf there,” he said.

And although it is known that Donald Trump awaits a juicy commercial “offers” with its partners, Korean Air announced on Monday the purchase of more than 100 Boeing aircraft for about 50 billion doolarars.

“A misunderstanding”

The US president, who often criticizes the costs incurred by the United States to guarantee the safety of his allies, also said he was determined to obtain a better compensation for the 28,500 US soldiers parked in South Korea.

“We have spent a lot of money to build a base, and there was a contribution made by South Korea, but I would like to see if we can get rid of the lease and obtain the property of the field,” he said, an idea that certainly should awaken the indignation of the South Korean left.

The meeting between the two presidents had not begun under the best auspices, Donald Trump had launched a burden as sudden as he did not bit against Lee Jae-Myung, denouncing “a purge or a revolution” in South Korea. But after the meeting, Donald Trump softened: “I am sure it is a misunderstanding” because “there is a rumor that circulates.”

Lee Jae-Myung came to power in June, happening to the conservative Yoon Suk Yeol, dismissed after trying to impose martial law. The raids mentioned in Donald Trump’s message probably refer to surveys about Yoon Suk Yeol’s allies.
