Three people die in Vietnam during the passage of Typhon Kajiki

Typhoon Kajiki, who touched Vietnam on Monday, caused the death of three people and left 13 injured. Almost 45,000 people have been evacuated.

Three people died and 13 were injured after the visit of Typhon Kajiki to Vietnam, local authorities announced on Tuesday, August 26. The typhoon reached the ground on Monday, with winds that reached 130 km/h, starting the roofs of thousands of houses and electricity for more than 1.6 million people.

The torrential rains fell in the country on Tuesday, the authorities warned possible sudden floods and landslides in eight provinces. In the streets of Vinh, in the north center of the country, rescuers and soldiers break through through the dozens of trees and the roof pieces that mess the roads, found AFP journalists.

A “absolutely scary” typhoon

“A huge steel roof was started from the eighth floor of a building and crashed into the middle of the street,” said Tran Van Hung, 65, AFP, “we were very lucky that no one was injured. This typhoon was absolutely scary.”

The floods have isolated 27 villages in the mountainous areas of the country, and more than 44,000 people were evacuated as Typhoon approaches, authorities said. Further north, in Hanoi, heavy rains flooded many streets, creating chaos scenes on Tuesday morning.

Risks accentuated by human activity

For scientists, climate change caused by human activity leads to more intense and unpredictable climatic conditions, which accentuates the risk of floods and storms, especially in tropics.

After hitting Vietnam, Kajiki weakened to become tropical depression and swept the north of Laos with heavy rains. The high speed rail line that connects Laos with China suspended all its services on Monday and Tuesday, and some roads were cut, but death was not immediately reported.

In Vietnam, more than 100 people have been killed or disappeared after natural disasters during the first seven months of 2025, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
