Moldova calls on Romania and Ukraine to defend themselves against Russian missiles

Moldovan authorities have asked Romania and Ukraine to monitor and protect their airspace, Legislative Assembly Speaker Igor Grosu said Thursday.

“Neutrality does not protect against missiles, but it must be defended and therefore we are obliged to defend our airspace,” Grosu told Chisinau radio.

“We have benefited from an EU program worth €40 million, also for this [defesa do espaço aéreo]🇧🇷 We also talk to our Ukrainian and Romanian partners because they have much better systems,” Igor Grosu said in a television broadcast by the Jurnal channel.

Grosu qualified the moment as “complicated” and referred to two recent incidents, in which Russian missiles entered Moldovan airspace, one of which came down in Naslavcea, in the north of the country, close to the border with Ukraine.

The Republic of Moldova has also been the target of unprecedented cyberattacks since last fall.

“We have never had such an attack wave and not only correspondence from authorities was targeted, but entire computer systems. Our assessments show that they came from the Russian Federation,” said the head of the Moldovan legislature.

Grosu also announced that a bill on the Intelligence and Security Service will be introduced in parliament, which will provide additional tools in the fight against espionage.

The Republic of Moldova is “full of spies from the Russian Federation,” Grosu said, adding that there will be new law changes that will increase penalties for treason and other related crimes.
