An 85 -year -old Viennese hiker died this Sunday, August 30 in the afternoon at the Austrian Alps after the attack against a herd of cows, during which his 82 -year -old wife was injured, said Austrian police on Monday, September 1.
“The flock of six cows and three calves wanted to attack their dog”, who were with Correa according to the first testimonies, “and trampled their owners,” said police spokesman Markus Lamb.
An orderly autopsy
Other hikers and people who work in a nearby shelter have rescued the victims, providing first aid and then calling emergency services, according to a police statement. The couple was evacuated by helicopter from the Forest Road that leads to the shelter, in Ramsau Am Dachstein, in the Stiria region (southeast).
“The 85 -year -old man died shortly before being operated” at the Salzburg hospital, said Markus Lamb.
An autopsy was ordered to determine if the injuries suffered are the cause of his death. The days of his wife are not in danger and the dog was delivered to relatives of the withdrawal. The cattle came from a herd of Murbodner, an Austrian domestic race in the extinction process.
Last year, a hiker accompanied by two dogs had already been killed in similar circumstances in Austria. Other incidents took place in 2017 and 2014.
After the deadly attack in 2014, the Austrian government had published “a driving guide” for hikers, who are asked to remain away from herds in the grass and keep their dogs with a belt, but separate them in case of an attack.
