Belgium will recognize the State of Palestine before the United Nations General Assembly in September, announced Belgian Minister Maxime Prévot on Tuesday, September 2, September 2, Tuesday, September 2.
“Palestine will be recognized by Belgium during the UN session! And firm sanctions of the Israeli government are taken,” wrote the head of Belgian diplomacy in X.
The French initiative followed by Western countries
At the end of July, President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would recognize the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly, which will take place from September 9 to 23 in New York. In the process, more than a dozen Western governments have asked other countries of the world to do the same.
“In view of the humanitarian drama he interprets in Palestine and uniquely in Gaza, and faced the violence perpetrated by Israel in violation of international law (…) Belgium had to make strong decisions to accentuate the pressure on the Israeli government and the terrorists of Hamas,” he explained.
“Belgium will join the signatory countries to the New York statement that takes the way to a solution to two states and, therefore, recognizes them,” said the minister.
Canada also expressed its intention in favor of a state of Palestine. The United Kingdom has also announced that it would recognize it, unless Israel assumed a series of commitments, including that of a high fire in the Gaza Strip.
In total, three quarters of the UN Member States recognize the State of Palestine, proclaimed by the Palestinian Management in exile at the end of the 1980s.
