The death toll in the fire at a nightclub in Binh Duong province, in southern Vietnam, amounts to 33, according to the latest balance released this Wednesday by the Vietnamese authorities.
The vice president of the provincial People’s Committee, Mai Hung Dung, pointed out on Wednesday the complexity of the rescue operation, which was interrupted this afternoon after rescuers entered the compound and located more bodies, according to the Vietnamese newspaper ‘Tuoi Tre’. .
The first balance indicated 12 dead and seven wounded, having been updated to 33 dead and 10 wounded.
The authorities mobilized around 70 soldiers and more than a dozen specialized vehicles, including two trucks with ladders, managing to rescue 22 people who were on a terrace of the compound.
The fire started around 9:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. in Lisbon) on Tuesday in a three-story karaoke establishment in the town of Thuan An, about 20 kilometers north of Ho Chi Minh City, and the origin of the flames is still unknown.
According to witnesses, the fire started between the second and third floors and quickly spread through the soundproofing foam behind the interior woodwork.
The exits of the karaoke bar, which has 30 rooms and a constructed area of more than 1,500 square meters, were closed when the fire started, causing panic among many customers and employees.
Dozens of people chose to jump from windows and balconies to escape the flames.
The authorities have opened an investigation to clarify the origin of the fire.
