A fraudulent website, used to access bank accounts and extract money, which injured more than 200,000 Britons, was taken down this week as part of an international operation, Scotland Yard announced on Thursday.
In the United Kingdom alone, more than 100 people have been arrested, mainly for fraud, including the person in charge of the ‘site’ iSpoof, Teejai Fletcher, 34.
According to the London police, there were more than 200 thousand victims in the UK, who were injured in the tens of millions of pounds.
Through iSpoof, criminals posed as representatives of large banks, presenting phone numbers considered reliable, in order to extract money and personal codes, through phone calls or SMS.
In total, more than 10 million connections were made worldwide in the last year, 40% of which to the United States.
“The use of technology by criminals is one of the most important challenges […] in the 21st century,” London Police Chief Mark Rowley was quoted as saying by Agence France Presse (AFP).
This operation was carried out in coordination with Europol, Eurojust and the FBI.
