An Australian declared guilty of having fatally poisoned three members of his in -laws with poisonous fungi was sentenced on Monday, September 8 in life imprisonment on Monday, with the possibility of probation after 33 years, an epilogue of a case that has aroused terror and fascination throughout the world.
“His total remorse absence only shakes the knife in the victims’ wound,” Judge Christopher Beale, from the Supreme Court of the State of Victoria to Melbourne, said, condemning Erin Patterson, 50.
“The severity of their acts justifies the imposition of the maximum sanctions for their crimes,” he added.
Erin Patterson had been convicted in July for the murder of her husband’s parents and the aunt of the latter, as well as an attempt to murder for her husband’s uncle.
The events date back to a family meal in July 2023 in a small rural city in southeast of Australia. Patterson, passionate about the kitchen but also for criminal cases, had served an English specialty, a res when meat, with Faloidal Amanitis, one of the most dangerous poisonous fungi. Three guests died, only one had survived.
Her husband, from which she is separated, had rejected the invitation. Her motivations remain mysterious, at the end of more than two months of judgments, followed by the media and the enthusiasts of criminal businesses worldwide.
Food and fatal fungi fillet
At the food table organized by Erin Patterson on Saturday, July 29, 2023: Don and Gail Patterson, the parents of her husband Simon. Simon’s aunt, Heather Wilkinson and Uncle Ian, shepherd of a local Baptist Church, they are also there.
Simon had decreased, explaining his discomfort against this invitation. “I hope you change your mind,” said Erin Patterson from SMS. Separated since 2015 without having divorced, its relationship deteriorated due to a disagreement about the payment of the alimony.
Erin Patterson had announced to the guests who suffered from cancer and asked for advice on how to announce it to their children, according to the Prosecutor’s Office. However, no medical file has reported this diagnosis. The Prosecutor’s Office concluded that it was a lie to attract its guests.
For food, Australian mixed meat fillets with mushrooms, covering everything with puff pastry to make res asington. A “delicious” dish, according to Aunt Heather Wilkinson.
Fungi, then identified as Amanitas Faloids, can have a sweet taste that hides their toxic character. These are among the most mortal fungi on the planet and are responsible for 90% of all deaths due to the consumption of poisonous fungi.
Don, Gail and Heather succumbed in a week. Only Ian, the shepherd, survived, after weeks of hospitalization.
Suspect of murder attempt between 2021 and 2022
Erin Patterson was described as an attentive mother, who played an active role in the local population, offered as a volunteer to edit the village bulletin.
He was also a member of a Facebook group where he discussed the most famous Australian murders. Her friend Christine Hunter told the trial that she had a reputation as “outstanding detective.”
To the helm, Erin Patterson said he had wanted to kill anyone and maintained that the poisoning was accidental. At the end of the trial, Justice, however, revealed that the police had suspected for having tried to kill her husband three times between 2021 and 2022.
