“An intense series of heat waves across Europe, coupled with unusual drought conditions, led to a summer of extremes, with record temperatures, droughts and fires,” said Freja Vamborg, scientific director of the European institute.

“Droughts and fires in many parts of Europe have affected society and nature in many ways,” he noted, noting that “the previous record was only one year old.”
