According to the final data of the 2021 census, more than 1.6 million Portuguese residents of Portugal have emigrated for at least a year, with France being the main country of origin for these citizens.

According to figures released this Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), there were 1,608,094 Portuguese living in Portugal in 2021 who had lived in another country for an uninterrupted period of at least a year.

These former Portuguese emigrants mostly returned to the interior of the northern and central regions and the autonomous region of Madeira.

These are Portuguese who, after a period of emigration in France (23.2%), Angola (14.0%), Switzerland (8.1%), Brazil (7.2%), Mozambique (6.5%) and Germany (6.3%) returned to their country of origin. ).

According to INE, Portugal lost 2.1% of its population between 2011 and 2021, reversing the growth trend of recent decades.

“At the time of the census, on April 19, 2021, there were 10,343,066 people living in Portugal (4,920,220 men and 5,422,846 women), representing a decrease of 2.1% compared to 2011,” he added. to the National Institute of Statistics.
