A Pakistani was accused of the murder of a 17 -year -old influencer who rejected his advances, a case that aroused strong sentences in the country where violence against women is omnipresent, said an AFP journalist.
The 22 -year -old defendant, Umar Hayat, declared himself innocent before a court in Islamabad. “All accusations against me are unfounded and false,” Muhamad Afzal Majoka told Judge.
Police described this murder of “atrocious composure”, declaring that Umar Hayat killed the adolescent last June because he refused to respond to his many online applications.
More than one million subscribers
Sana Yousaf had more than one million subscribers on social networks, including Tiktok, a very popular social network in Pakistan, in which he shared videos of his coffees, beauty products or traditional favorite clothes.
Women have invested this digital space where they find an audience and income, in a country where less than a quarter of women participate in the formal economy.
This murder relaunched the debate on the safety of women in Pakistan, after the publication of comments on social networks accusing the victim of being responsible for their own death.
Violence against women is omnipresent in Pakistan, according to the country’s human rights committee, and cases of violence after rejected marriage requests are frequent.
The Pakistani Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence in May of a rich American-Pakistani heir who had decapitated his partner, Noor Mukadam, in July 2021 because he had refused to marry him.
