Seven people were killed Tuesday in a shooting at a Walmart supermarket in Chesapeake, Virginia, US, according to local media citing police sources.
“Chesapeake police confirm seven dead, including the gunman, in the Sam’s Circle Walmart shooting,” the city said.

Earlier, Chesapeake Police Chief Leo Kosinski said several deaths and injuries were found at the grocery store.
🇧🇷We believe there is only one shooter and he has died.” said Leo Kosinski, quoted by AFP, without however clarifying the circumstances of the suspect’s death.
Police were notified of the incident at 10:12 PM (today 3:12 AM in Lisbon) on Tuesday, when the store was still open.
Virginia state senator Louise Lucas, who represents the Chesapeake region, said she was “heartbroken” by the Chesapeake shooting. “I will not rest until we find solutions to end this epidemic of gun violence in our country, which has claimed so many lives.” wrote Louise Lucas on Twitter.

About 40 emergency vehicles have been dispatched to the site, where a significant police operation is also being deployed.

Authorities are asking people living in the area and the relatives of those who may have been in the supermarket at the time to go to the local convention center.
“We are shocked by this tragic event,” Walmart said in a statement. The company added that it was cooperating “closely” with authorities.
Chesapeake is a city of approximately 250,000 residents and part of the Virginia Beach and Norfolk metropolitan area.
