Ukrainian authorities on Thursday fined Kharkiv mayor Igor Terejov about 100 euros for speaking Russian on television and managing his social networks in the same language.
Tereev broke a law that makes Ukrainian a common language throughout the country even before the Russian invasion.
The Commission for the Protection of the State Language indicated that the mayor has been fined 3,400 hryvnia (about 93 euros) for using “profanity” during his speeches on television, as well as on his Facebook and Telegram pages.
The ban will take effect on December 4, 2022, when Terejov’s four-week appeal period expires.
The sanction comes after several regional authorities charged the mayor of Kharkiv with repeatedly addressing citizens, according to the Ukrinform news agency.
In May 2021, the head of the State Language Protection Commission, Taras Kremin, announced that he would tighten scrutiny on Kharkiv’s administration due to several violations in the local assembly by deputies for using the Russian language in parliament . .
Terejov has been mayor of Kharkiv since November 11, 2021, when he won the early elections by just over 50% due to the death of his predecessor, Hennadi Kernes, from covid-19.
