Donald Trump makes a link between autism and paracetamol during pregnancy, despite the lack of scientific evidence

Known for his shock statements in the field of health, Donald Trump questioned the benefits of paracetamol and hepatitis B vaccine, at a conference dedicated to autism, one of his main concerns.

Among the statements without the Scientific Foundation and the improvised medical experience, Donald Trump, of the White House, has reproduced this Monday, September 22 with Autism, this card already filmed in its first mandate on the COVID-19.

At that time, he suggested that swallowing disinfectant would be enough to get rid of the coronavirus. Five years later, US President’s statements still surprised journalists.

With the health of millions of people at stake, he urged pregnant women on Monday not to take a paracetamol. “According to a rumor, and I don’t know if so, they have no paracetamol in Cuba because they have nothing to pay the paracetamol. Well, they hardly have autism,” said Donald Trumples of a press conference at the White House.

“Take the Amish, for example. They practically have no autism,” he insisted, in reference to an American community known for his extremely traditional lifestyle, between cars thrown by horses and the rejection of modern technology.

As for his Minister of Health, the very empty Robert Kennedy Jr., added: “Bobby wants to be very careful with his words. I am not so cautious.”

“Don’t take it”

In his conference dedicated to autism, one of his main concerns, Donald Trump, also had difficulty pronouncing “acetaminophen”, or paracetamol, the active ingredient of Tylenol, which he advised against pregnant women.

“Do not take it,” he insisted on several occasions, inviting women to “endure”, without giving solutions to the fever that could touch them, they or the baby they use.

Present in very widely used analgesics, such as Doliprane, Dafalgan or Tylenol (in the United States or Canada), paracetamol or acetaminophen for pregnant women against pain or fever, other drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen are contraindicated, especially at the end of pregnancy.

Linking it with autism would be “very irresponsible and potentially dangerous,” he had warned dozens of American scientists in early September, while the Wall Street Journal had mentioned this song. “Science is much more nuanced and uncertain,” they insisted, warning that such an announcement would sow “confusion and fear.”

Divergent studies

The question of a link between taking Paracetamol during pregnancy disorders and neurodevelopment in children has nothing new “, notes for AFP David Mandell, professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. Many studies on the subject have been carried out, with divergent results.

A vast study conducted in more than 2 million children and published in 2024 in the prestigious medical magazine Jama had ruled out this risk. But this summer, an analysis of previous studies led to an inverse conclusion, however, its authors prevent additional studies to confirm a possible link.

One of the difficulties found by researchers comes from the fact that it is difficult to distinguish the effects of taking this medication from the reasons why David Mandell explains.

“We know that fever (…) can increase the risk of delay and neurological development disorders,” he says. “Therefore, you must be very careful when trying to determine which of these two factors is responsible for increasing the risk of autism.”

The Trump administration also promoted folinic acid on Monday as a potential treatment against certain forms of autism, a promising track but that requires more research according to experts.

Hepatitis B vaccine, useless for babies?

On Monday, the president himself questioned the benefit and safety of vaccines, suggesting that people who do not take medications and do not vaccinate have no autism.

“Hepatitis B is transmitted by sexual means. There is no reason to vaccinate hepatitis B to a baby that has just been born. Therefore, I would say that the baby is 12 years old and is well developed,” said the Republican during an event dedicated to autism in the White House.

The vaccination of newborns against hepatitis B is recommended in the United States as in many other countries due in particular to the possibility that the child is contaminated by his mother during pregnancy or childbirth. “They inject many things to these beautiful small babies, it’s a shame,” he said. “It seems they inject a horse.”

Donald Trump has also recommended a larger space among babies vaccines, which have been the cornerstone of public health programs worldwide for decades. Before clarifying: “I’m not a doctor, but I give my opinion.”
