The United Nations Organization (UN) published, this Friday, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the latest data on women victims of violence and, in 2021, 81 thousand women and girls were murdered throughout the world and, in Portugal, during 2022, 22 women have already lost their lives due to murder.
Accounts made, about five women were killed, per hour, on the planet. In more than half of the cases, 56%, the deaths were caused by their partner or relatives, demonstrating, as the organization says, that “even home is not a safe place.”
“These figures are frightening,” considers the UN, and explains that the figures may be higher than those recorded, because “innumerable female fatalities are not counted, given that their cases are not reported and many others do not report cases of violence.” , due to lack of legal or juridical support”.
According to the United Nations, the Asian continent registered the highest number of femicides in the private sphere, while African women and girls “are at greater risk of being killed by an intimate partner or family member.” In North America and Europe, Covid-19 has caused a significant increase in intimate femicides in North America and Europe.
In the case of Portugal, 28 women have already been murdered in 2022, 22 of them occurring “in the context of an intimate relationship.” Data collected by the Victim Support Association (APAV) and cited by the UN show that, on average, 37 people per day resort to the association, mostly women and for domestic violence.
November 25 was also designated Orange Day within the framework of the UNiTE campaign of the United Nations, symbolizing this color a future free of violence, but also as a form of solidarity with the fight for the end of all forms of violence against women. .
