The most recent case was reported on the night of November 8, when pilots from several aircraft contacted the control tower at Porto Alegre airport, in the south of the country. The reports are also piling up on social networks and there are several users who confirm the sightings.
The first report of a sighting appeared on Oct. 22, when a “strange light” was seen in the Santa Catarina area, on a flight departing from São Paulo and bound for Porto Alegre, as reported by CNN Brasil.
The conversations between the control tower and the pilots approaching Salgado Filho Airport in Porto Alegre were broadcast by a YouTube channel that tracks the airport’s communications, according to Brazil’s Estadão newspaper, which quotes some of the communications.
For example, one of the pilots, responsible for Latam Airlines Flight 3406, asked the control center if they had information about an “object at position 10 for 11 hours practically above Porto Alegre, slightly further south”. So far, the origin of the lights and sightings is unknown and neither the Brazilian Air Force nor Brazilian air traffic control have commented yet.
