Morocco: more than 400 arrests and almost 300 injured after the clashes

After several days of clashes between protesters and the police, 400 people were arrested in Morocco, this Wednesday, October 1. Another 300 were injured, according to a new evaluation.

More than 400 people were arrested and almost 300 wounds after the violence that punctuated demonstrations in several Moroccan cities on Tuesday, September 30, demanding reforms from the public health and education sectors, the Ministry of Interior said Wednesday.

Unauthorized demonstrations organized on Tuesday night, for the fourth consecutive day, in the call of the Genz 212 Group, which recently appeared on the Discord Platform and whose initiators are unknown, gave rise to clashes with the police in cities such as Oujda (East) and Inzegane, in the suburbs of Agadir (south).

During this violence, people “used white weapons, cocktails and stones of Molotov,” Rachid El Khalfi, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said.

He informed 263 injured “to several degrees” in the ranks of the police and 23 on the side of the protesters, including a person attended in a hospital in Oujda. The spokesman also said that 409 people were put in police custody after these clashes, informing 140 police vehicles and 20 burned individual cars.

“The protesters also assaulted administrations, banking agencies and stores, which have looted and looted” in particular in Inzanane and Oujda, according to Rachid El Khalfi.

In a tense atmosphere, the protesters and the police faced for hours on an Avenue in Inzegane, according to the images of the AFP. Sometimes, hooded people threw stones at police officers and burned garbage containers and the surroundings of a shopping center, in videos transmitted by local media that AFP could not be authenticated.

In Rabat, the Prosecutor’s Office decided, this Wednesday, October 1, that a second group of 97 people, three of whom were placed, were going to be tried, they were told AFP to their lawyer Soud Brahma, stating that the date of their trial has not yet been established. The lawyer added that another 26 people had been released without loads.

On Tuesday, a first group of 37 people, three of whom are arrested, also continued in Rabat. His trial will begin on October 7, according to Soud Brahma.

This Wednesday night, for the fifth consecutive day, new events are planned in a dozen cities.

The Genz 212 group, which expressed its “regret” in the face of the violence on Tuesday, describes itself as a “discussion space” about “questions that concern all citizens, such as health, education and the fight against corruption.” In Morocco, social inequalities remain an important problem with strong regional disparities and a gap between the public and private sectors.
