Air traffic was suspended at Munich airport on Thursday, October 2 at night due to an overview of unknown origin, a German police spokesman said after several European countries reported aerial intrusions granted to Russia.
According to a press release from the airport, 17 flights from Munich were canceled at night, affecting almost 3,000 passengers. The traffic resumption time has not yet been announced.
15 flights that were supposed to arrive in Munich were also diverted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienne and Frankfurt. Passengers blocked in Munich were treated with camp beds, covers, drinks and snacks, the press release added.
Thursday, around 9:30 pm (French time), several people saw drones around the airport, confirmed the police spokesman. The Bavarian authorities have launched research to identify machines and their owners, without success.
Then drones were identified again, this time above the airport site, causing the two pending takeoff and landing around 00:30.
Killing authorization
Despite the intervention of police helicopters, “there is no information available on the type and number of drones” or their origin, specifies the spokesman. This incident occurs before the last weekend of Oktoberfest, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of people every day in Munich.
The beer festival in the city of Bavara had been closed half a day on Wednesday after a bomb alert and a family drama. Germany is alert to the threat of drones, while several European countries, including Poland and Denmark, Russia enter recent incursions into their airspace.
On Thursday, the 27 gathered in Copenhagen to discuss these growing attacks and discussed the establishment of an antidrone “wall”. Last Friday, in Germany, a “swarm” of drones was detected on Friday above the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The German government said they wanted to authorize the Armed Forces to “knock down” these devices.
