An explosion and an important fire occurred on Thursday, October 2 at night in a Chevron refinery in the second in Los Angeles County, which caused huge columns of miles visible flames, according to several US media.
The causes of the fire are unknown, but the city of The Second said there was no threat to the public and that there was no evacuation order in progress.
The Office of the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, indicated in his account that his service worked “in real time with local and national authorities to protect the surrounding community and guarantee public safety.”
The explosion occurred around 9:30 pm locals (6:30 am Friday French time). Videos taken at the time of the explosion and published on social networks show a large brilliant fire ball in a deafening noise. The fire decreased considerably one hour after the explosion.
“There is no reason to alarm”
Shortly before 10:30 pm Los locos, a Los Angeles County official, Holly Mitchell, said on a local television channel that the fire was widely under control. She said there was no immediate report as injured and “there is no reason to be alarmed by the surrounding area.”
Fire in refineries are part of everyday life in South Bay, which houses several important oil production facilities.
In 2022, firefighters took two hours to turn off a fire in an installation of the second. In 2020, a fire in the Marathon Petroleum refinery in Carson projected flames of at least 30 meters in the air and woke up the concerns for hours.
But the fire had caused little important damage to refinery operations, reports Los Angeles Times.
