Jihad Al-Shamie, author of The Attack against a synagogue on Thursday in Manchester, who left two dead and three serious injured, is a British citizen of 35-year-old Syrian origin, who was not known by the authorities to be radicalized, but who was accused of rape.
This man, who was killed by the police on Thursday morning at the attack scene, arrived as a child in the United Kingdom from Syria. He had obtained British nationality in 2006 when he was about 16 years old.
His family has lived in the Manchester region for thirty years and is currently in the city of Prestwich, about three kilometers from the synagogue, in Crumpall, in the agglomeration of Manchester.
Potential threats for a deputy
Jihad al-Shamie worked as a tutor, English teacher and computer programming, according to ITV News. He had never been reported by extremism. In a press release, the assailant’s father said he was “deeply shocked” by the acts committed by his son. “The Al-Shamia family, in the United Kingdom and abroad, firmly condemns this odious act that addressed peaceful and innocent civilians.”
On Friday, police officers were parked in front of a house in Prestwich, AFP journalists said. According to a neighbor quoted by Daily Telegraph, Jihad al-Shamie had lived there for 10 years “without women or children.” He “never seemed to talk to anyone in the neighborhood,” he added.
Jihad al-Shamia often used a bodybuilding bank in the garden in front of the house, said another neighbor in times, Geoff Haliwell. His neighbors describe him as “a simple and ordinary man”, according to the testimonies identified by the Guardian.
