Attack at Manchester: What do we know about the Jihad al-Shamie, the assailant that “could be influenced by the radical Islamist ideology”?

Jihad Al-Shamie’s profile, attacked to the dead after an attack that killed two dead in front of a synagogue in Manchester, this Thursday, October 2, is still vague. If he has been accused of rape in the past, the authorities did not know radicalization.

Jihad Al-Shamie, author of The Attack against a synagogue on Thursday in Manchester, who left two dead and three serious injured, is a British citizen of 35-year-old Syrian origin, who was not known by the authorities to be radicalized, but who was accused of rape.

This man, who was killed by the police on Thursday morning at the attack scene, arrived as a child in the United Kingdom from Syria. He had obtained British nationality in 2006 when he was about 16 years old.

His family has lived in the Manchester region for thirty years and is currently in the city of Prestwich, about three kilometers from the synagogue, in Crumpall, in the agglomeration of Manchester.

Potential threats for a deputy

Jihad al-Shamie worked as a tutor, English teacher and computer programming, according to ITV News. He had never been reported by extremism. But the anti-terrorist police said Friday night that “Al-Shamia could be influenced by a radical Islamist ideology.” Recently accused of rape, it was free on bail.

The British police are also investigating to determine if he is the author of the emails of threat sent to a conservative deputy in 2012 by a man who appears under the name of the Yihad Alshamie, according to Times.

A traumatologist

Jihad al-Shamie’s father is a trauma doctor who worked for several NGOs in the areas of war, according to The Daily Mail. On LinkedIn, he appears as a war surgeon.

In a press release, the assailant’s father said he was “deeply shocked” by the acts committed by his son. “The Al-Shamia family, in the United Kingdom and abroad, firmly condemns this odious act that addressed peaceful and innocent civilians.”

On Friday, police officers were parked in front of a house in Prestwich, AFP journalists said. According to a neighbor quoted by Daily Telegraph, Jihad al-Shamie had lived there for 10 years “without women or children.” He “never seemed to talk to anyone in the neighborhood,” he added.

Jihad al-Shamia often used a bodybuilding bank in the garden in front of the house, said another neighbor in times, Geoff Haliwell. His neighbors describe him as “a simple and ordinary man”, according to the testimonies identified by the Guardian.

The anti -terrorist police arrested and placed six people in total, suspected of “preparation and incentive to commit terrorist acts.” These are three men and three women.
