Europe “must respond” to the “hybrid war” led by Russia, said the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday, believing that “something new and dangerous” is brewing in the European sky.
“We must not only react, we must dissuade. Because if we doubt acting, the gray zone will only be expanded,” he warned in a speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Referring to flights with drones about strategic places in Belgium, Poland, Romania, Denmark and Germany, but also to submarine cable cuts and even the malicious influence campaigns during the elections, insisted that they cannot try “isolated acts of harassment.” “Two incidents can be a coincidence. But three, five, ten? These are gray zone campaigns against Europe.”
The “Anti-Drone Wall” considered essential
The president of the European Commission returned mainly to the “Anti-Drone Wall”, an idea that had launched a month ago, considering that it was an essential response to the realities of the modern war.
He requested the establishment of an affordable system for “rapid detection, rapid interception and, if necessary, rapid neutralization”, insisting that Europe has much to learn from Ukraine on this issue.
Ukraine, which must intercept hundreds of drones launched by Russia in its territory almost every night, is one of the few European countries that manufactures anti -Drones drones, much cheaper than missiles or combat planes.
