Satellite images of Ukraine plunge into darkness after power outages

Satellite images of Ukraine taken by NASA were widely shared by pro-Kremlin accounts on social media after the country was targeted in massive attacks on Wednesday.

NASA this week revealed satellite images of Ukraine plunged into darkness due to massive power outages, after being targeted by Russian strikes on Wednesday. These images have been widely shared on social media by pro-Russian accounts to promote Moscow’s hits.

According to the view captured on November 24 by the US space agency, the day after the attacks a predominantly black mass can be seen in the middle of Europe, a sign of a Ukraine badly affected by power cuts, while Moscow and its conurbation, in Russia, shines brightly further north.

Another photo, dated this time from January, shows the large agglomerations of the same country largely illuminated. The two photos placed side by side allow one to understand the extent of the power outages related to the Russian bombing in Ukraine.

More than 6 million homes are still without electricity

These photos were shared by pro-Kremlin netizens, to praise the success of the Russian strategy. “Ukraine’s infrastructure will be demolished and Ukraine will be sent back to the 18th century,” Duma Vice President Pyotr Tolstoy warned again on BFMTV on Wednesday.

More than 6 million Ukrainian homes were still affected by power outages on Friday, compared with 12 million on Wednesday, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

With some 600,000 homes without power in the afternoon and its region, Kyiv, the capital, as well as Odessa, Lviv, Vinnytsia and Dnipropetrovsk provinces, are the cities most affected by the cuts.

Moscow’s strategy since October has been to bomb Ukraine’s energy facilities. It has been denounced as constituting “war crimes” for Ukraine’s Western allies.
