Widespread power outages in Ukraine after Russian attacks

Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and rail network in recent weeks as winter approaches, raising fears of a campaign that could plunge millions of people into darkness.

Power outages have occurred in almost all of Ukraine due to damage to electrical infrastructure caused by Russian attacks, the network operator announced this Wednesday, October 15, a sign of a situation that has worsened compared to the day before.

“Due to the complex situation of Ukraine’s energy system, emergency power cuts have been implemented in all regions” except in Donetsk (east), where the fighting is concentrated, Ukrenergo announced on Telegram.

“Emergency restoration work is being carried out in all areas affected by the bombings,” the national operator added, asking residents to use the available electricity “in moderation.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, cuts had already been introduced in eight of Ukraine’s 24 regions.

Moscow wants to “wreak havoc”

The private operator DTEK also announced power cuts in several regions, including Lviv (west), Odessa (south) and the capital kyiv and its region.

Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and rail network in recent weeks as winter approaches, raising fears of a campaign, like in previous years, that could plunge millions of people into darkness.

Last week there were already power outages throughout Ukraine, especially affecting part of the capital for several hours.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of wanting to “sow chaos” among the population with these bombings, which also damaged the Ukrainian gas sector.

Ukraine, for its part, regularly attacks oil refineries and hydrocarbon pipelines in Russia with drones, a strategy that has caused fuel prices to rise in this country since the summer. The Ukrainian military also recently attacked a power plant in the Russian border region of Belgorod, causing power outages there.
