Revolt in Madagascar: Colonel Randrianirina installed as president after three weeks of demonstrations

The deposed president Andry Rajoelina confirmed this Thursday, October 16, that he had fled abroad after almost a month of particularly violent demonstrations on the island. The head of the army unit that joined the anti-government protesters took over the presidency.

Malagasy army colonel Michaël Randrianirina was sworn in as president of Madagascar this Friday, October 17, a few days after the military took power and the fall of former president Andry Rajoelina, who fled abroad after three weeks of demonstrations.

Michaël Randrianirina, head of CAPSAT, an army unit that rioted and joined anti-government protesters last weekend, read the presidential oath during a ceremony at the Higher Constitutional Court in Antananarivo, the capital, AFP journalists found.
