The American president, Donald Tump, stated this Saturday, October 25, that he “would not waste time” scheduling a new meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, without an agreement in sight to end the conflict in Ukraine.
“You would have to know that we are going to reach an agreement,” Donald Trump told reporters aboard his Air Force One plane, in response to a question about what might convince him to hold a new summit with Vladimir Putin.
“I’m not going to waste my time. I’ve always had an excellent relationship with Vladimir Putin, but this has been very disappointing,” he added, referring to his attempts to resolve the conflict between Moscow and kyiv.
New sanctions against Russian oil
Donald Trump on Tuesday indefinitely postponed a newly announced planned meeting with Vladimir Putin in Budapest, saying he did not want “wasteful” discussions, and the United States imposed new sanctions on Russian hydrocarbons the next day.
However, a Kremlin envoy for economic issues, Kirill Dmitriev, met with Trump administration officials on Friday and Saturday, a Russian source close to the discussions told AFP. These should continue on Sunday.
According to US media, Kirill Dmitriev spoke on Saturday in Florida with Steve Witkoff, one of Donald Trump’s emissaries.
The day before, the Russian envoy had told CNN that a diplomatic solution to the conflict was “quite close”, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described as a “good compromise” the idea, proposed by Donald Trump, of discussing with Russia on the basis of the current front line.
